Camp Mack Receives Grant from REMC Camp Mack recently received a grant of $360 from Kosciusko County’s REMC Envirowatts Fund to plant six (6) trees, each approximately fifteen foot tall, of various species. Jefferson Elementary 5th graders from Jamie Gill’s and Scott McClintock’s classes planted the first of these trees, a sugar maple, on Earth Day when they were at Camp Mack for outdoor school from April 21-23.
Planting trees is part of Camp Mack’s larger goal and mission to care for the environment and to help Camp’s visitors experience creation. All guests are invited to learn about the alternative energy sources, wind and solar, which provide the only power for the Camp’s Nature Cabin. Camp continually replaces incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs. Recycling is a part of Camp’s normal operation and guests are encouraged to use the recycling containers provided in all of the lodges.
Camp Mack offers environmental awareness and educational opportunities for campers and guests in an effort to encourage them to appreciate and care for the environment. Campers see composting and vermiculture in process. Camp Mack’s board walk over a wetlands area offers many teaching opportunities. Volunteers come two days annually to work at prairie restoration – removing invasive species to keep camp’s prairie viable. Camp tries to use earth friendly cleaners whenever possible.
Camp Mack scored at Steward Level (next to the highest level) on the International Association of Conference Center Administrators Green Center Self-Assessment.
Camp Mack staff appreciate the ways that KREMC shows concern and respect for our planet by purchasing “green power,” as well as how KREMC offers energy audits and works to educate persons in many ways about being kind to our environment as they meet their individual energy needs.
